| Aikido
is a traditional martial art created this century by Morihei Uyeshiba.
He refined his art in his home town on Iwama and on his death in 1969 his
teaching was carried on at the Iwama dojo by Saito Sensei. The style has
become internationally known as 'Iwama style' and the London Aikido Club
carries on the tradition and adds 'Iwama Ryu' to its name.
The basis of the training is to learn a series of techniques aimed at being able to overcome strong attacks by using the whole body as a single, co-ordinated unit to attack an opponent's weak points. These basic movements are also designed to deal with simultaneous attacks from a group of assailants or armed attackers. The training is also intended to not only allow the practitioner to be able to subdue assailants but also to increase an awareness of where danger is present so that threatening situations can be avoided all together. The whole process leads to a higher level of fitness and increased confidence. The London Aikido Club is a founder member of the British Aikido Board and devoted to the full-time practice of the classic tradition of Iwama Ryu Aikido. The club has regular courses and welcomes new members. There are two ways to start training; with a Beginners' Course and General Tuition classes. The Beginners' Course is aimed at introducing new students of Aikido to the unfamiliar world of Japanese martial arts. Students will be instructed on how to wear kit and what etiquette is required (so ex-JETs will at least have a bit of a head start there). The General Tuition classes are designed for students with a flexible timetable and involve a senior student working with a beginner. For more information, contact: London Aikido Club, 60a
